MAS Symposium Exploring Expertise

Expertise and expert knowledge are omnipresent terms and powerful concepts in healthcare settings, and there is increasing debate about whose expertise is relevant in which contexts. From highly specialised knowledge of physicians, nurses and other health professionals to the knowledge of non-medical therapists and lay people, to the experience-based knowledge of patients, service users and survivors, expertise comes in many forms and variations.

Please note that the symposium will be held in English.

This interdisciplinary research symposium invites participants to critically examine variations of ‘expertise’ and ‘expert knowledge’. In four thematic sessions, we want to explore how different understandings come at play in healthcare settings, how they inform healthcare practices, how implicit and explicit 'expert knowledge' is taught in educational institutions, and how research practices and notions of scientific 'evidence' are shaped by and shape 'expertise' in healthcare settings.

The symposium will be organized around interactive sessions on: ‘Bodies and Care’, ‘Power and Agency’, ‘Materialities and Technologies’, and ‘Gender and Intersectionality’.

The two-day symposium is organized by MAS Medical Anthropology Switzerland, a commission of the Swiss Anthropological Association, in collaboration with Bern University of Applied Sciences, Dept. of Health, Applied Research & Development in Nursing. It is organized by Julia Rehsmann and Eva Soom Ammann in the context of their research activities in the interdisciplinary SNSF project Sterbesettings/Settings of Dying. MAS symposia and colloquia are financially supported by the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences.

We broadly invite participants with academic as well as professional background in healthcare, medical anthropology or related fields, members of patient, peer or other interest groups as well as interested persons from the broader public.
