Data protection information and declaration of consent for the Swiss National Science Foundation research project «Platform-based work in Germany, Austria and Switzerland»
Important: Participation in the research project is voluntary. Non-participation has no negative consequences and termination is possible at any time.
For what purposes will personal data be processed?
The research project aims to study the still young phenomenon of platform work in German-speaking countries to better understand the opportunities and risks of these new forms of work for employees and companies. Our research project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation as part of the National Research Program 77 on Digital Transformation.
Your data will be processed exclusively for scientific research in the context of this study.

What is the legal basis for processing personal data?
The Bern University of Applied Sciences and the University of Bern are subject to the Cantonal Data Protection Act of the Canton of Bern. The legal basis for the processing of your personal data is your voluntary consent. For EU citizens, the General Data Protection Regulation applies in addition, your consent is given following Art. 6 para. 1 lit. a DSGVO, or Art. 9 para.2 lit. a DSGVO, as far as special categories of personal data are concerned. The provisions of the data protection law are complied with at all times.
What personal data is processed?
In the course of the study, we collect personal data. This includes:
- Contact details,
- Metadata (information about your computer system and the browser used),
- Psychological data (according to your information in the questionnaire),
- Usage data of the online platform, in a particular frequency, duration of use of the platform, ranking on the platform, (this only concerns participants who are active on one of the following platforms: seniorsatwork, wetalent, freelance junior, auftragsbank, carnest, zebraskills, remote work jobs, content.de, gulp.de, lemonfrog
- as well as your socio-demographic data (according to your information in the questionnaire).
How long is personal data processed/stored?
All characteristics that can be used to establish a personal reference are stored separately. These characteristics are deleted after the study is completed.
Where is my personal data processed?
Survey tool: Qualtrics; storage location: Microsoft Teams.
How is the anonymity of the participants* established in the course of the research project (anonymization)?
We collect personal data. This means that conclusions about you can be drawn based on the data collected. In the course of the study, your personal data will be assigned a subject code and stored separately from the other data. After completion of the study, the personal data will be deleted, so that it is no longer possible to assign the recorded data to your person.
Note: Your contact details are only accessible to the study staff and will only be used for contacting you within the scope of the study.
For all other purposes, e.g. scientific analysis, your data will be pseudonymized, i.e. only assigned to a numerical code. This numerical code alone does not allow any assignment to your person. This assignment is only possible for the study personnel.
Will personal data be transferred to third parties?
No personal data is transmitted to third parties.
Will personal data be published?
The research results are published in the usual scientific form. We guarantee that no conclusions can be drawn about individual persons from the publications.
What are the basic rights of data subjects?
You have the following rights concerning your personal data:
Right to withdraw the declaration of consent
The processing of your personal data is only lawful with your consent. You are not obliged to consent to the processing; consent is voluntary. In addition, you have the right to withdraw your consent to the processing of personal data at any time to the controller(s) for the future (for all your personal data that is not in anonymized form). Refusal or revocation of consent will not result in any legal or other disadvantages for you. The revocation of consent has the effect that the processing of the personal data concerned becomes unlawful for the future following the revocation declaration. The lawfulness of the processing carried out until the revocation is not affected by this.
Right to information
You have the right to information about the personal data concerning you that is collected and processed in our working group (Art. 15 DSGVO).
Right to rectification
You have the right to have inaccurate personal data concerning you corrected (Art. 16 DSGVO).
Right to deletion
Under the legal conditions, you have the right to have personal data concerning you deleted (Art. 17 DSGVO), e.g. if this data is no longer necessary for the purpose for which it was collected and the deletion is not contrary to any legal retention periods or you have revoked your consent and there is no other legal basis for the processing. This right does not extend to anonymized data after no link can be established between data and person (no identifiability).
Right to restriction of processing
You have the right to request the controller to restrict the processing if one of the conditions of Art. 18(1) DSGVO applies.
Right to data portability
Under the conditions of Art. 20 (1) DSGVO, you have the right to data portability.
Right of objection
If grounds arise from your particular situation, you have the right to object to the processing of personal data relating to you. Subsequently, processing will no longer take place as a matter of principle.
Right of appeal
You have the right to complain with a supervisory authority if there are doubts about the lawfulness of the processing of the personal data concerning you. The competent supervisory authority is the data protection supervisory authority of the Canton of Bern.
