Theater in Times of War, Theater of Peace? Forschungs-Mittwoch #180

About the roles the (performing) arts can, must, should play or not.

22.01.2025, 5pm–7pm – Living Room, Moserstrasse 30, 3014 Bern

The design features the number 180 in white on a black background at the bottom and light green at the top.

This Research Wednesday revolves around the two research projects ‘Aestheticising war violence’ and ‘Contemporary art, popular culture and peacebuilding in Eastern Europe’. We will reflect on the significance of art in war contexts and its achievements in relation to peace endeavors. Should art fulfil a purpose in the context of war? Can it even do so? And can art make any contribution to peace processes?

We shall use the experience gained in five studies to ask whether art can be instrumentalised in the context of war and during peace processes (e.g. as a means of propaganda). And, conversely, whether art can be used and exploited unilaterally in certain situations of that kind.
