Situation
Road safety is a very important societal issue in Switzerland, as accidents can result in very high overall economic costs (e.g. out of town, main road, serious injuries: CHF 925,000/accident). In light of this, the ongoing reduction in accident numbers is a high priority. With its strategic orientation, the Canton of Zurich has created ideal conditions for the further development of an accident analysis methodology. With improved accident analysis, deficits in the road infrastructure can be detected automatically, which leads to improved road safety and makes a contribution to the economy.
Course of action
The aim of the project is to develop an automated methodology that makes it possible to combine road-safety-relevant information from different sources (3D scans, plans, images, etc.), to analyse it automatically from a road-safety point of view, and then to make this information available via maps and GIS systems. The system thus makes a valuable contribution to road safety in Switzerland. In this context, the following points will be examined in detail: standards relevant to road safety; the identification of road safety indicators; the influence of road geometry on safety; the influence of road furniture on safety; the potential for improving safety and the development of a tool for appraising road safety, options for improving road safety and a realising a 3D-presentation of the results.
