Lebenslauf

  • Raphaël Cuomo (*1977) and Maria Iorio (*1975) are an artist duo based in Geneva and Berlin. They have worked together since graduating from ESBA (currently HEAD, Geneva) in 2003. In 2006-2007, they took part in the postgraduate programme of Jan van Eyck Academy, Post-Academic institute for research and production, Fine arts department (Maastricht). They were artists in residence at the Swiss Institute in Roma (2008-2009); SOMA, Mexico City (2015); Pratiques d'hospitalité, Platform for critical research and political imagination, Grenoble (2017); Iaspis, Stockholm (2018). They were recipients of the Swiss Art Award (2007, 2008, 2012), Premio Gallarate (2012), Premio Fondazione Furla per l'Arte (2014). In the recent years, Iorio/Cuomo have fostered cooperation and alliances with cultural producers from different artistic, academic and activist fields, and developed a collaborative artistic practice involving long-term research on transnational memory, counterhistorical narratives and past and present global mobilities, with a special focus on the southern and northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Their last projects examine the intertwined histories of migration and cinema.
  • Iorio/Cuomo's practice includes a curatorial approach; they currently focus on decolonial “minor cinemas”, and previously curated Unfinished histories – histoires en devenir, a series of exhibitions, screenings and talks that revisited the historiographies of the expanded field of moving image practices. Iorio/Cuomo have shown their work in various exhibitions, film festivals and programmes, including Alternative Festival (Belgrade); If Not For That Wall (CiC, Cairo); Documenta 14 Public Program (Athens); Quadriennale 16 (Rome); Shooting at Clocks, Savvy (Berlin); Visions du réel (Nyon); Logica del passaggio (Querini Stampalia, Venice); Europe. The Future of History (Kunsthaus Zürich); FID (Marseille); Twisted Realism (Argos, Brussels); Courtisane Festival (Ghent); Chewing the Scenery (54th Venice Biennale); Der Standpunkt der Aufnahme, (Arsenal, Berlin); The Interpreter (Les Complices, Zürich); The Maghreb Connection (Townhouse Gallery, Cairo).
