The talk examines the concept of performance diagrams by pointing out their historical, epistemic and aesthetic functions for theatre and dance. The background for it is the book ‘The Poetics of Performance Diagrams’ that was recently published by Cambridge Press in which Andrej Mirčev argue that diagrams can provide new tools for theory, practice and archiving, while at the same time enabling a comprehensive reflection on the intersections between poetics and politics. Focusing on the potentiality of diagrams to resist representation and dichotomies, the lecture elucidates the visual, corporeal and spatial dimension of performance. In doing so, Andrej Mirčev elucidates the significance of diagrammatic thinking for performance studies. At the same time, the book and the talk offer a glimpse into the history of theater through the prism of architecture, visual communication and ritual studies.
