Injuries to the ligaments of the upper ankle joint are some of the most common musculoskeletal injuries experienced by recreational and professional athletes. In approximately 40% of cases, these injuries lead to chronic ankle instability, which can result in professional and sporting limitations.

How does chronic ankle instability present?

  • Repeated ankle sprains
  • Turning or «giving way» of the ankle
  • Persistent (palpable) instability

The majority of ankle injuries are classified as minor trauma, which often leads to an unclear diagnosis. The ensuing rehabilitation strategy is often uncertain too.

The guest lecture addresses these uncertainties:

  • How do we approach current paradigms that attempt to explain the causal factors of chronic ankle instability?
  • How can these insights be implemented in clinical practice?
