A double degree in Australia
14.01.2025 Australia – the land of kangaroos, beaches and coral reefs. Nora Mahrer spent a semester at the University of the Sunshine Coast as part of the double degree programme and gained a second master's degree. In this interview, she shares her experiences and gives valuable tips on how to successfully plan a double degree.
Why did you decide to do a double degree programme?
To promote my personal growth. I always like to step out of my comfort zone. The double degree programme not only offered me the chance to get two master degrees, but also prepared me well for working in an international environment. Working in multicultural teams at the university allowed me to improve my intercultural , my English as well as my communication skills. I also love to discover the world, and the programme was a wonderful opportunity to experience life in a foreign country first-hand.
What particularly attracted you to the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia?
I had a choice between the SolBridge International School of Business in South Korea and the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia. Australia particularly attracted me because of its fascinating nature, friendly people, and the pleasant weather.
What challenges did you experience compared to a regular course of study?
There was a considerable amount of administrative work. I started the detailed organisation nine months before my departure. I started by getting an overview of all the important information and requirements, and then prioritised and scheduled the tasks. Among other things, I had to negotiate with my employer for unpaid leave. Registration and enrolment at the university in Australia were also very time-consuming. All in all, the administrative effort was challenging, but it was definitiely worth it.
Did the double degree open new professional doors for you?
The double degree strengthens my profile and gives my professional and academic path additional momentum. Since January 2025, I have been taking on a new professional challenge as a business analyst as part of an agile team (offshore in Asia).
What advice would you give to someone considering a double degree programme?
A project like a double degree requires early planning. I started looking into it at the beginning of my studies at BFH. It is also helpful to discuss the options with family, employers and others at an early stage. It’s also a short and unique time, so I do recommend having sufficient financial resources to be able to enjoy your time abroad.
