Hydrogen Systems Laboratory

Due to its simple design, high efficiency and low environmental impact, hydrogen systems will play an important role in the energy systems of the future. Equipped with a state-of-the-art infrastructure, we are a competent player in the research and development of this promising technology.

Our Laboratory

To make hydrogen systems attractive for the market, large-scale and cost-effective production of fuel cells as well as efficient technologies for the production and storage of hydrogen are needed. Fuel cells require a reliable control system and can be easily combined with other electricity storage technologies. So-called hybrid systems are able to follow the power curve of any application. It is in these areas where we focus our activities and continuously develop our high level of expertise in industrial projects.

Services

  • Development of fuel cell systems
  • Consulting and coaching
  • Test of hydrogen systems

Expertise

Our laboratory works on the production, storage and transport of hydrogen from renewable energies and develops fuel cell systems according to its own (awarded) fuel cell concept (IHPoS concept):

  • Development of air-cooled and water-cooled PEM fuel cells up to 10 kW with H2/air or H2/O2 usage (PEM = Proton Exchange Membrane)
  • Development of hybrid systems with PEM fuel cells, batteries and supercapacitors
  • Hardware and software development for the control of fuel cells and electrolysers
  • Development and assembly of test benches for H2 systems
  • Performance and life tests of PEM systems on dynamic test benches

The Hydrogen Systems Lab is one of the key laboratories for research at the Energy Storage Research Centre.

Facilities

We use a modern infrastructure for the development and testing of PEM fuel cell systems in the power range from a few watts to several kilowatts. Such systems are ideally applicable in portable or mobile electricity generation systems.
