WWF sustainability rating: Bern University of Applied Sciences comes out on top

08.11.2024 In a comparison of Swiss universities, BFH came out on top among the nine universities of applied sciences analysed.

"The BFH sees itself as a committed university, especially when it comes to sustainable development. The excellent result confirms this commitment. We are strongly committed to achieving the global sustainability goals in teaching, research and in cooperation with civil society," says BFH Rector Prof. Dr. Sebastian Wörwag.

Benchmark among Swiss universities of applied sciences

Since 2017, WWF Switzerland has regularly examined how universities integrate sustainability into their processes, structures, research, teaching and operations. In recent years, the BFH has gradually established itself as a benchmark for sustainability among universities of applied sciences, according to the fourth study.

Outstanding climate roadmap

Among other things, the BFH stands out with its Climate Roadmap 2023. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60 per cent by 2030 through 30 specific measures in the areas of buildings, catering, mobility, awareness-raising and IT. The WWF praises the fact that BFH's approach is based on clear data and that it is followed up consistently thanks to GRI reporting.

Sustainability in research and teaching

BFH also scores with a clearly visible focus on sustainability in research and teaching. "We currently have 550 research projects that contribute to the UN's sustainability goals," explains Manuel Fischer, head of the strategic thematic field of sustainable development. In teaching, 13 degree programmes and 13 MAS and CAS continuing education programmes have an explicit sustainability focus. And we offer a range of support services for students who are committed to sustainable development. In its assessment, WWF also praises the fact that faculty and researchers are supported with expertise and resources to develop such services.

Strategically anchored commitment

"I am very pleased with the rating result and would like to thank everyone who contributed to it," adds Manuel Fischer. "Sustainable development is now strategically anchored in almost all areas of the BFH. We will build on this to continue to support and shape the transformation towards a sustainable society."
