Swiss-Chinese Summer School in Technology

The Department of Engineering and Information Technology of the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH-TI) and the College of New Materials and New Energies of the Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) in China are organising a four-week Summer School, which is open for both BFH-TI and SZTU bachelor students.

– Biel - Shenzhen

Topic

New Energy Technologies: Production, Storage and Mobility

Content

The Swiss-Chinese Summer School in Technology is jointly organised by the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) and the Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) in China. Twenty Swiss and twenty Chinese students spend two weeks in Switzerland and two weeks in Shenzhen.

The umbrella topic of the Summer School is "New Energy Technologies: Production, Storage and Mobility". The programme of the Summer School starts in Switzerland with an overview of the basic physical concepts of energy production, storage and mobility. This basis is extended towards the latest technologies in the field such as solar cells, wind turbines, batteries charging/discharging technology and hydropower. Economic aspects of the topic are also touched.

The second part of the programme in Shenzhen is dedicated to the technology and production of solar cells and new mobility technologies such as hybrid and electrical cars and bicycles.

Teaching format

The programme is a blend of keynotes, case studies, laboratory work, problem classes and excursions to related sites (e.g. Mont Soleil solar and wind power test site, Grimsel hydropower plants and Jungfraujoch test site in Switzerland, Build Your own Dreams (BYD) electrical car company and Hanergy solar cell production facilities in Shenzhen). The students will mostly work in bi-national pairs.
