Biography
- International Mezzosoprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, became first known for her portrayal of Schöck’s Penthesilea at the Basel Theater in 2007. She began her career at the Lucerne Theater and then continued her career at the Frankfurt Opera. In the summer of 2017, Baumgartner was Fricka in Bayreuth, and in both summers of 2020 and 2021, she interpreted Klytemnaestra in Strauss’ Elektra at the Salzburg Festival.She first studied violin in Freiburg (played in the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and as a student substitute at the Theater in Freiburg). Later she studied voice in Karlsruhe, Vienna, Sofia, and New York. Her path led her from a dramatic coloratura soprano to a lyric mezzo, finally to a dramatic mezzo-soprano. Her repertoire is broad, ranging from Händel roles to contemporary music. She made her debut as Rosina at the Wiener Kammeroper in the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn. This was followed by her first permanent engagement at the Lucerne Theater, where she sang roles such as Charlotte (in Massenet’s Werther), Mrs. Quickly (Verdi’s Falstaff), and also Kokozowa in the operetta The Count of Luxembourg by Lehàr. In Basel she sang Eboli (Verdi’s Don Carlo) in the French version, Penthesilea (Schöck’s Penthesilea) , Gräfin Geschwitz (Berg’s Lulu), Carmen (Bizet’s Carmen) Amneris (Verdi’s Aida).For 10 years, Baumgartner was in the ensemble of the Frankfurt Opera, where she sang all the important Verdi roles in her fach. At the Salzburg Festival, she made her debut as Gräfin Geschwitz in Berg’s Lulu in 2010, then appeared as Charlotte in Zimmermann’s Soldaten in 2012 and sang Agave /Agaue in Henze’s Bassariden in 2018.Another milestone in her career was the world premiere of Beat Furrer’s Bianca Notte at the Hamburg State Opera, where she sang Indovina. Known as a singer actress, she worked with directors Calixto Bieito, Hans Neuenfels, Claus Guth, Krzystof Warlikowski, Kornel Mondruzco, Michael Thalheimer and others.She is a regular guest at the Vienna State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Munich State Opera, the Zurich Opera House, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Lyric Opera Chicago, and many other prestigious houses.In concert, Baumgartner performs mainly Mahler (Lied von der Erde, Lieder, Klagendes Lied), Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and many other works in the canon. Tanja has often performed lieder recitals at the Frankfurt Opera, Liestal as part of the Festival Stimme zu Gast, and at the Schlosskonzerten Beuggen with Malcolm Martineau, Tatiana Korsunskaya and Riccardo Bovino.Baumgartner started teaching privately in 1998, and in 2004 she started her private vocal studio in Lucerne. Tanja is often invited to impart masterclasses. She has been brought to teach at the Mediterranean Opera Festival in Sicily (with Jack Livigni, Nelly Miriciou, and Salvatore Fisichella) in 2016, 2018, 2021 (online), and 2022. In 2021, she gave a masterclass at the Young Singers Project of the Salzburg Festival, and at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre; in 2022 she gave a masterclass at the Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera.Born in Rheinfelden/Baden, and raised in a family of teachers, it is close to Tanja’s heart to combine her practice as an active performer with her teaching, creating the greatest possible connection between the rehearsal room and the stage.
